Outdoor rink expected to be ready for winter

A project a few years in the making figures to be completed in time for this winter.
The outdoor hockey rink project, located behind the curling club, seen the paving competed and the boards installed recently and is now nearing a completion after approximately five years of volunteer efforts and fundraising.
A number of local community groups approached The Pas Rotary Club in 2014 asking for help on community based projects and out of that a committee was formed to explore how best the club could support these groups noted Rick Hubbs, a long-time Rotarian who was one of a several representatives on hand for a group photo at the rink to celebrate it being close to completion. Out of that committee it was decided to put considerable financial support behind the outdoor rink project.
That considerable support included $30,000. In addition a number of other groups stepped forward with either financial or in-kind help -or both- to make the project take flight, including $20,000 from the Kinsmen Club of The Pas, $10,000 from the Winnipeg Kinsmen Club and $35,000 from Barb and Bruce Morrish, while the Elks Club of The Pas contributed $5,000 and the Town of The Pas also made sizeable contributions as well.
Now the project nears completion and the hope is to have it ready for use in October or November, with fencing yet to be installed around the edges to keep pucks in and lighting also needing to be installed.
“I think this will be awesome that we get this rink finished,” said Hubbs.
