Riding needs are plenty as election nears

With the provincial election on the horizon, it is currently apparent that there are more questions for the citizens of The Pas-Kameesak than there are answers – topping the list is whether or not there will be the staff in place needed to run the election in the riding.
A returning officer (RO) and an assistant returning officer (ARO) are in need to run a successful and smooth election for the community members of The Pas to have their voices heard.
“The RO and ARO are responsible for running the election within their electorial division,” said Alison Mitchell Manager of Communications and Public Information for Elections Manitoba. “The RO is a paid position awarded through a merit-based competition. ROs must be completely non-partisan.”
In addition to filling the positions of RO and ARO, Elections Manitoba is recruiting voters in The Pas-Kameesak electoral division to work as registration agents, information officers, assistant voting officers and voting officers.
“We anticipate that we will be able to fill all positions required for the election,” said Mitchell.
Most positions are open to anyone age 16 and over who are legally entitled to work in Canada. Some positions require a criminal record check that is facilitated through Elections Manitoba.
“It’s important to fill these positions so that the election can run smoothly across the province,” said Mitchell. “And, so all eligible voters are able to cast a ballot at a voting location in their own community.”
If positions cannot be filled to capacity, The Pas citizens may be looking at having to travel to a different location in order to cast their ballots which could mean a smaller voting population that wouldn’t represent the community well or its needs moving forward.
Applications for all positions can be completed online at www.electionsmanitoba.ca.
