From remembrance to the work of finding the children

Opaskwayak Cree Nation Beatrice Wilson Health Centre lead a vehicle procession on June 30th, to the Arbor Site to honour of the all the residential schoolchildren whose graves have been located and those who have to be found. The procession was also in honour and memory of every child that attended an Indigenous Residential School and ended with prayers and a pipe ceremony. Elders gathered to share stories and reflections. An update on the work done thus far was given by Janet Head and Frank Whitehead on July 2nd at the Arbor Site, where a group of elders outlined the path forward and identifying possible grave location using ground penetrating radar out at the MacKay Residential School site but also the marking of graves. At this meeting, documentary evidence was offered to support known burials and burial locations to the elders for their research files.
