Christ Church Anglican with Reverend Jann Brooks gathered with volunteers to bell toll for the lost children at Kamloops Residential School on Sunday June 6th. Some of those in attendance who rang the bells were Mayor Herb Jaques, Onekanew Christian Sinclair and Onuschekew Jennifer Flett who all said a few words prior to starting. “We need to go forward working responsibly together in harmony.” Stated Onekanew Christian Sinclair. Mayor Herb Jaques said “The time for Truth and Reconciliation is past and now it is time for reconciliaction (reconcili-action). Onuschekew Jennifer Flett said “we thanked the church for the opportunity to remember the children”, and then invited all elders and Residential School survivors to come forward and ring the bell first.
The Reverend Deacon Maureen Maciesza offered an acknowledgement of the gift of the land on which Christ Church resides and we prayed for the people of the Treaty 8 lands. The Reverend Jann Brooks, rector, began the day with an invocation remembering the 215 lost children. “As Jesus gathered the children to His breast, let us gather their grieving families to our breast with love and compassion. We asked God’s blessing as we toll the bell, to guide the children home.” A total of 35 people from the Town of The Pas, Opaskwayak Cree Nation and R.M. of Kelsey attended to toll the bell.
