Coming on board as the new General Manager of the OCN Blizzard is former Head of Scouting Wayne Yaremko. Yaremko will be preparing the Blizzard for the upcoming season over the summer.
The overall duties of the general manager is to work with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) in communications and administration as well as hiring staff, helping with recruitment, the team budget, marketing, communicating with the Blizzard Board of Directors and other duties according to Yaremko.
He is also excited to take on the manager role, having already worked with the club for quite a while.
“It’s a great feeling to become the GM for the OCN Blizzard hockey club. I have been involved with the club for the last few years, mostly in player recruitment, and now look forward to all of the challenges of my new role,” wrote Yaremko in an email to the Opasquia Times.
They are still looking for someone to fill the Head Coach position however. Doug Hedley vacated both the GM and Head Coach roles following the conclusion of the 2017-2018 season.
“We are currently still receiving applications for the position. We are confident that we will have a competent, well-qualified coach in place in the near future,” he said.
There is a lot of rebuilding to be done for the team with nine players aging out of junior hockey last season.
“We are naturally looking at having a younger hockey club for the upcoming season. In the last few years we have put in a large amount of effort in the recruitment, scouting and drafting of possible future players. This has led to the club having a very talented group of younger players available in our system. We will be looking for some of these players to make the transition to our hockey club this year,” said Yaremko.
And while it’s not hockey season for the Blizzard that doesn’t mean that they’re not active within the community. They just completed an identification camp down in Brandon; they will be hosting a booth at the upcoming The Pas & District Chamber of Commerce Trade Show later this week where they will be selling season tickets at a special rate. They are also getting ready for the upcoming bantam draft.
“In early June we will be attending the MJHL league meetings and bantam draft. During the coming weeks we will be active in the community, touching base with sponsors and preparing for the upcoming season,” explained Yaremko.
He also showed his appreciation for the Blizzard fans and sponsors for supporting the club.
“I’d like to thank all the fans and sponsors from the past season for their support. This support is much needed and appreciated by the organization. Without this support, and continued support, the hockey club would not be able to operate. Also I would like to encourage our fans and sponsors to contact the Blizzard office if they would like to have a player attend an event they are holding. It is important to the OCN Blizzard organization that our players take an active role in the communities and we look forward to seeing this happen in the upcoming year,” Yaremko said.
