Blizzard defenceman awarded $3,000 scholarship from MJHL


Last week on Wednesday, August 16, the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) announced that they have awarded four graduating players with scholarships. Tanner Lewis of the Winkler Flyers, Carter McMurdo of the Portage Terriers, Brandon Holtby of the Dauphin Kings and Maverick Rafter of the OCN Blizzard were the recipients.
These scholarships are worth $3,000 each according to MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis in the announcement; this will help Rafter in his upcoming semester at the University of Winnipeg where he is attending in the fall.
Maverick Rafter is a 21 year old defenceman; he comes from Winnipeg, standing at six feet, and weighs 180 pounds.
Rafter -according to the MJHL website- has played with the OCN Blizzard for two seasons in 2015-16 and 2016-17. In his first season Rafter played a total of 59 games in the regular season, scoring 11 goals and 19 assists. During the playoffs Rafter played in five games scoring one goal and two assists.
In his second season with OCN Rafter played in a total of 57 games, scoring seven goals and 22 assists before chipping in one goal and five assists in 15 post-season games.
Messages were left for OCN Blizzard Head Coach and General Manager Doug Hedley seeking comment but were not returned as of press time.
